Carthago Z was a grey Holsteiner stallion foaled in 1987 and bred by Erhard Krampitz in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He was the offspring of Capitol I and the mare Perra, featuring a pedigree enriched by esteemed bloodlines, including Cor de la Bryère and Rantzau. His career saw him excel under riders such as Bo Kristoferrssen and Jos Lansink, establishing him as a powerhouse in international show jumping. Carthago Z rose to prominence in 1995 when leased by Zangersheide stud. He represented the Dutch team in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, securing commendable finishes. Among his career highlights were his victory at the Grand Prix de La Baule in 1998 and triumphs in Nations' Cup meetings, notably at Hickstead and La Baule. Post-retirement in 2000, following his final competition at the CSI-W in Mechelen, he transitioned successfully to a breeding career. His legacy as a sire endured through numerous top-level showjumpers descended from him. Carthago Z passed away on 21 May 2013, leaving a lasting impression on the sport both through his achievements and his progeny.
