Rantzau was a French-bred thoroughbred stallion born on 1 January 1946. Henri Tambareau bred him, and he was registered in the Thoroughbred studbook. His sire, Foxlight, was a notable producer of both flat racers and steeplechasers, while his dam, Rancune, had success on the racetrack. Over 20 years at the French National Stud at Saint-Lô, Rantzau covered 772 mares with a 50% fertility rate. Despite his average fertility, Rantzau’s offspring made a profound impact in showjumping, excelling internationally. Rantzau's own racing record showed two wins and five placings from nine starts between 2000 and 3000 metres and a third-place rank among three-year-olds.
