About Fragance de Chalus
Fragance de Chalus is a (died 2019) Bay Selle Francais showjumping broodmare foaled in 1993, by Jalisco B out of a Fury de la Cense dam.
One of modern showjumping's most consequential foundation mares. Bred by Solange Planson in the Cher and acquired young by Joris de Brabander for Stal de Muze, she produced between 46 and more than 50 direct foals (dated public counts vary), largely by embryo transfer — she was bred before she was ever backed. Her influence is both vertical and horizontal: sons who became elite sires — Mylord Carthago HN (team silver at the 2010 WEG and 2011 Europeans, London 2012, and 5th on the 2025 WBFSH jumping-sire ranking), Bamako de Muze (BWP Ambassador, sire of Kasanova de la Pomme and Don Juan van de Donkhoeve), Norton d'Eole and Arc en Ciel de Muze — and daughters who became repeat producers: Vodka Orange de Muze (dam of Bacardi-Rhum de Muze and Sandor de la Pomme), Anais Anais de Muze, Jolly Girl de Kervec, Quaranca de Muze, Nimfe and Nais de la Pomme among them. A 2019 estimate put her descendants near 300, with around forty at 1.50m+. Her last foal, Qoup de Coeur de Muze (2016), was placing at 1.55m in 2026. She was retired from breeding when she became harder to get in foal and died at Stal de Muze in May 2019, aged 26; the programme continues through her daughters and granddaughters.
Own record: Fragance combined breeding with a real sport career of her own: winner of the Belgian classic cycle and a Belgian Championship finalist at four, sixth in the five-year-old cycle with a trip to Lanaken, a Belgian finalist again at six, winner of two seven-year-old cycle classes, and later a 1.45m horse with Karline de Brabander — described as most competitive at 1.40m and still jumping amateur classes at twenty with Katia de Brabander.
ET success story: 47 horses, 13 black-type, approved stallions incl. Mylord Carthago, Bamako de Muze, Norton d'Eole. Deceased.
