About Darco
Darco is a (died 2006) dark bay BWP showjumping stallion foaled in 1980, by Lugano van la Roche out of a Codex dam.
Darco, a Belgian Warmblood stallion born in 1980 in Belgium, holds a significant place in showjumping history. Bred by Martinus Paesen, he is listed with the Belgian Warmblood Studbook (BWP). His lineage includes sire Lugano van la Roche and dam Ocoucha, with roots extending to Lugano I, Der Low, Codex, and Cottage Son. Darco excelled early, winning the Belgian Young Horse Championship at ages five and six. His career is marked by numerous Grand Prix victories, contributing to the Belgian team's success internationally. With Belgian rider Ludo Philippaerts, Darco secured sixth place at the 1990 World Equestrian Games in Stockholm and seventh at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, alongside a victory at the World Cup in London. His performance in Nations Cup events enhanced Philippaerts' international status. Upon retiring, Darco became a sought-after breeding stallion, gaining recognition for performance genetics. In 2007, the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) ranked him as the leading showjumping sire globally. His progeny have succeeded at top international events. Although he has passed, and his semen is unavailable, his genetic influence continues. Ocoucha, his dam, played a role in his conformation, providing power, precision, and agility, traits which Darco passed to his descendants.
Darco's offspring have achieved impressive feats, reinforcing his status as a seminal sire in showjumping. Among his notable progeny is Sapphire, a mare known for her outstanding career with rider McLain Ward. Sapphire contributed to team gold medal victories at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics and team silver at the 2006 World Equestrian Games. Another remarkable descendant is Winningmood, who competed with Luciana Diniz in several European Championships and won in LGCT Grand Prix classes in Madrid and Vienna. Complementing Darco's pedigree are Erco van't Roosakker, HH Copin van de Broy, and Amaretto D'Arco, all of whom achieved noteworthy results in Nations Cups and Grand Prix events, perpetuating Darco's legacy in the equestrian world.
