Pilatus, a bay stallion of the Westfalian studbook, was born in 1965 in Germany. Sired by Perseus, who was himself out of the Anglo/Arab sire Ramzes, Pilatus carried a rich lineage. His dam Duela's pedigree additionally brought in traits from Hanoverian bloodlines through the stallion Duellant. Pilatus was bred by Kunibert Münch and quickly distinguished himself in the breeding arena when he was second in his licensing in 1967 at Münster-Handorf.

Although Pilatus did not have a significant competition record in showjumping, his enduring impact can be seen predominantly in his role as a sire. Pilatus stood for ten seasons in Germany before being exported to the Netherlands for five seasons. In 1984, he returned to his native Westfalia. Over his career, he was approved by several studbooks, including the Dutch KWPN, which further cemented his influence across breeding programs in Europe.

While Pilatus himself was not renowned in the competition ring, his legacy is carried on through his progeny. Most notably, he sired the showjumping stallions Pilot and Polydor, who have left a significant mark on the sport. Pilot, in particular, achieved historical recognition as the first showjumping sire whose progeny collectively earned over one million Deutschmarks. Pilot's offspring continued to thrive in competitive showjumping, with the notable achievement of his son Pedro contributing to Germany's gold medal in showjumping at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
