About Shane Sweetnam

Shane Sweetnam (born 19 January 1981) is an Irish showjumper from County Cork — raised in Castlemagner — who has built one of the sport's most durable transatlantic careers from Sweet Oak Farm in Wellington, Florida. He finished an IT degree at the University of Limerick in 2004, moved to the United States at twenty-three, and turned that move into two decades of five-star sport, a training operation, and a place on every important Irish team sheet.

His championship record centres on two horses ten years apart. With the Chacco-Blue stallion Chaqui Z he won European team gold at Gothenburg in 2017 — Ireland's famous against-the-odds title — finishing eighth individually, and jumped the 2018 World Equestrian Games at Tryon. With the grey Irish Sport Horse James Kann Cruz (Kannan x Cruising, bred in Ireland by Patrick Connolly) he won European team silver at Milan 2023, was second into the Paris 2024 individual final after Ireland's seventh in the team competition, and won the American Gold Cup twice and his first World Cup qualifier at Lexington in 2023.

At 45 he is riding the best form of his life: 2026 brought the CSIO5* Rolex Grand Prix at Falsterbo — his first Rolex Series Grand Prix, to sit beside the five-star wins he had already taken in North America — and a career-high world No. 5 on the July list, with Coriaan van Klapscheut Z ranked seventh among the world's combinations behind him. Horse Sport Ireland has named Sweetnam and James Kann Cruz in Ireland's four-combination squad for the World Championships at Aachen.

The career has had its griefs — Amaretto d'Arco, his first great partner, died in 2016, and the Nations Cup horse Main Road suddenly in 2019 — and its quiet triumphs of production: horse after horse brought from promise to the top of the sport in the same yard. He remains what Irish teams have relied on for fifteen years: the dependable man in the anchor slot who is now, finally, being counted among the world's very best in his own right.
