Big Ben, a chestnut gelding, foaled in 1976, was a world-renowned show jumping horse from Belgium. He was owned by Canadian Show Jumpers Unlimited Inc. and became famous due to the successful partnership with Canadian rider Ian Millar. Big Ben's career was marked by remarkable achievements, including multiple Grand Prix victories and six Spruce Meadows Derby titles.
Big Ben won the FEI World Cup Finals consecutively in 1988 and 1989, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Tampa, Florida, respectively. He also represented Canada in three Olympic Games (1984, 1988, 1992), with the Canadian team achieving fourth place in the 1988 Games held in Seoul. Additionally, he was a pivotal member of the team that secured individual and team golds at the 1987 Pan American Games in Indianapolis.
Throughout his career, Big Ben amassed lifetime earnings exceeding $1.5 million. His legacy in show jumping continued well beyond his retirement in 1994, underscored by his induction into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. Big Ben passed away on December 11, 1999, due to colic at Millar Brooke Farm in Perth, Ontario.
