About Zeus
Zeus is a (died 2001) chestnut Selle Français showjumping stallion foaled in 1972, by Arlequin X out of a Matador X dam.
Nurzeus, originally named Gordios, and known widely as Zeus, was a Selle Français stallion born on 19 February 1972 in France. Bred by Pierre Dambier, Zeus was sired by the Anglo Arab stallion Arlequin X and his dam was Urielle. Although Zeus did not have a competitive record of his own, he became a significant figure in showjumping breeding circles, contributing greatly to the success of Selle Français sport horses.
During his breeding career, Zeus produced numerous successful showjumping horses. He has been recognised for his genetic contribution to the sport, with his progeny achieving high levels of success and accruing substantial prize money. Zeus was approved for breeding within the Selle Français studbook and became influential through his offspring's performances in international showjumping competitions.
Standing at Gestut Vorwerk in Cappeln, Germany, Zeus remained a pivotal breeding sire until his death in August 2001. In his final days, Zeus's health deteriorated significantly to the point where he could no longer leave his stall or eat properly, leading to the decision to euthanise him in his best interest.
Zeus's progeny have made significant impacts in the world of showjumping, with numerous offspring excelling at international events. Notable offspring include Midnight Madness, who was crowned Jumper of the Year by the WBFSH in 1993, and Playback, who won the American League of the World Cup in 1986. Zandor Z, another influential progeny, competed successfully with Jos Lansink, cementing Zeus’s legacy in showjumping breeding. The collective winnings of his offspring amounted to 4.5 million Deutsch Marks in Germany, marking him as a stallion of considerable influence within the equestrian community.
Zeus died in 2001 at Gestut Vorwerk, Cappeln, Germany (Euthanasia due to deteriorating health). Breeding may continue via frozen semen — confirm availability with the stud.
