About Jan Tops

Jan Tops, born in 1961, is a celebrated Dutch showjumping rider and influential figure in the equestrian sport. Over his storied career, Tops achieved notable success at the Olympic Games, including a team gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics riding Top Gun, alongside renowned teammates Piet Raijmakers, Jos Lansink, and Bert Romp. Tops also represented the Netherlands at the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics, achieving commendable placements in both team and individual events.

In addition to his Olympic achievements, Tops was a pivotal member of the Dutch team in the European Championships, contributing to a team gold medal in 1991 at La Baule and a team gold medal in 1997 at Mannheim. His competitive career continued with significant participation in the 1999 European Championships held in Hickstead. However, Tops did not participate in World Championships or World Cup Finals, turning his focus to other pursuits in the sport.

Beyond his competitive efforts, Tops has significantly influenced the governance and promotion of showjumping. He is the founder of the Global Champions Tour, launched in 2006, which revolutionised the sport by enhancing its media profile and offering increased prize money, thereby attracting top-tier international competition.

Through his ownership of Stal Tops, a prestigious showjumping stable in Valkenswaard, Tops has been instrumental in horse trading and rider training, nurturing some of the sport's finest equestrian talents. Valkenswaard also holds a notable place in the Global Champions Tour, further highlighting Tops' influence in the showjumping community.
